A friend of mine asked me about the May 4th movement. And this was my opinion.
The May 4th Movement was definitely an important landmark in All Under Heaven. It signified a giant step backward in the Civilization. Classical and Literary Chinese began to dwindle in influence, and people became in favor of the Vernacular. Calls for abolishing the Chinese writing system gained grounds. New Chinese leaders in the fields of politics, literature and philosophy emerged, and they were mostly educated in barbarian lands in the West. In short, the May 4th Movement maimed the backbone of the Civilization, and sent the greatest cultural power of the world to a collapse. There is only a dimly lit future and recovery is not in sight.
